Gary Born - Mindfulness at Work

In his 35-year career, Gary Born held positions in several enterprises, and worked in roles including international consultant, team manager, facilitator, book author and Director. His range of activities spans artificial intelligence, quality management, software development and organisational and competency development.

Gary now focuses on mindfulness-based development programmes, aimed at the workplace and health-based settings. He offers three approaches - mindfulness skills development, individual coaching and group coaching. He has done the mindfulness-based teacher training course offered by the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at the University of Bangor, as well as further professional development in mindfulness for cancer, mindfulness in the workplace, and Enquiry. He is currently writing a workbook on mindfulness skills for everyday life.

Before retiring from Oracle Corporation in 2011, he held the title of Director and Master Principal Consultant. During his 15 years at Oracle, he had various roles. Gary was responsible for Organisational and competencies development for a large EMEA Group (Europe, Middle East and Africa). He developed and managed a number of Change programmes, including After Action Reviews, the Mastermind Group approach to corporate change, and Social Media adoption. He was instrumental in developing new approaches for online and remote meetings and creativity groups.

Prior to this, Gary held responsibility for parts of Oracle Method, its global approach to software and systems development. He developed and delivered training for process and change management, and for Knowledge Management programmes.

Before joining Oracle, he worked in software development and management, and he directed development of new tools for Artificial Intelligence and an intelligent system for financial planning. He held key roles in much quality management work in the 1980s and 90s, and published a book incorporating this experience (Process Management to Quality Improvement, John Wiley, 1994). Before that, he founded and chaired the British Computer Society committee on Expert Systems and Quality and was a member of several British Standards Institution committees.

Gary holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of Chicago, and a Masters Degree from the London School of Economics.

In his personal life, Gary is a passionate practitioner of meditation, and he facilitates and teaches mindfulness groups and individuals. He also does voluntary work for a London Cancer Centre, teaching qigong and mindfulness. He is married with two children and lives in London, England.
